Susan R. Rheingold, MD

Susan R. Rheingold, MD, is Attending Physician, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Oncology at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Rheingold graduated from Dartmouth College Magna Cum Laude in 1988 and is a 1992 graduate of the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Rheingold completed her residency in pediatrics at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland and a fellowship in pediatric hematology/oncology at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. After completing her training in 1999, Dr. Rheingold joined the staff of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia where she currently serves as the Medical Director of the Oncology Outpatient Clinic.

Dr. Rheingold’s expertise is in the diagnosis, treatment and biology of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and she serves on the Children’s Oncology Group’s Relapsed ALL Committee.

Dr. Rheingold maintains a special interest in experimental therapeutics and has served as a principal investigator for a Children’s Oncology Group national protocol. Dr. Rheingold is also an active member of the ground breaking CAR T cell immunotherapy team at CHOP and the local PI of relapsed leukemia protocol sponsored by the Therapeutic Advances in Childhood Leukemia group and the pharmaceutical industry.

Dr. Rheingold has authored over 60 peer-reviewed publications, abstracts, editorials, reviews and chapters. She has received numerous awards including Top Doctor, voted by Philadelphia Magazine readers; Leader of Family-Centered Care in Action, voted by staff and families at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia; Faculty Honor Roll, voted by residents at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia; and Young Investigator Award by
American Society of Clinical Oncology, for her work “Control of B Lymphocyte Development by Pre-B Cell Receptor-Mediated Signaling.”

Dr. Rheingold is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, and the Children’s Oncology Group.

Her other interests include supportive care for oncology patients undergoing chemotherapy, patient safety, medical education, and running and cycling. She is the captain of team CHOP, a triathlon team that raises money for childhood cancer research. She lives in Philadelphia with her husband and her 8 year old son.
