Yong Zhao, MD, PhD

Dr. Zhao is the founder and owner of Tianhe Stem Cell Biotechnologies. In 2005, Dr. Zhao discovered cord blood-derived multipotent stem cells (CB-SC) and successfully translated it into clinical use. Dr. Zhao also invented Stem Cell Educator Therapy for the treatment of diabetes and other autoimmune diseases in humans. This groundbreaking study has been highlighted by the American Diabetes Association at the 72nd Scientific Sessions (ADA, Philadelphia, 2012) as one of eight major diabetes breakthroughs in 2012. In 2013 and 2014, the Stem Cell Educator technology was the top third in rankings over 382 T1D clinical trials as released by the Juvenile Diabetes Cure Alliance and the State of Cure Report. His work received the 2006 and 2008 Rachmiel Levine Scientific Achievement Award amongst other awards and honors and was covered by CNN, USA Today, Reuters, and Science Daily. He has 39 peer- reviewed publications and owns 8 patents including 3 international PCT patents and 5 national patents in US. Dr. Zhao received his MD in Clinical Medicine form Shandong Weifang Medical Science, China, MS in Immunology from Shandong Academy of Medical Science, China and his PhD in Immunology from Shanghai Second Military Medical University, China. Dr. Zhao has held a Post-Doc position at the University of Chicago / Argonne National Laboratory, Department of Biology. He was an Assistant Professor and Principle Investigator at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Department of Medicine and is currently an AssistantAssociate Professor and Principal Investigator at the Hackensack University Medical Center, Department of Research.
